The money Guyana is making from oil is not benefiting the majority

Dear Editor

Imagine you have a boiling pot of water to cook rice. This pot is about to boil over because you put too much water in it. So, you decide to add more water. Obviously, the boiling water will boil over putting out your fire. The boiling water represents pollution being pumped into the earth’s atmosphere. With more and more pollution being pumped into the earth’s atmosphere by burning fossil fuel (like coal and oil and natural gas), sooner or later, the planet will be unable to cope. So what made you decide to put more water in the pot?

Well you thought that you could boil more rice and sell some. So, what made you decide to pump more pollution (by pumping more oil) into the earth’s atmosphere? You thought that you could make more money. So someone could have told you not to put more water in the pot because it will boil over. Stop going after pumping more oil to make a quick buck; renegotiate the lopsided ExxonMobil/Guyana oil contract so that Guyanese get a better deal before our fire is put out. This will negate the need to pump more oil (and cause more pollution). The money Guyana is making from Guyana’s Oil is not benefiting the majority of Guyanese anyway.

Sincerely,

Sean Ori
