A man has been remanded to prison after being charged with stealing a car and going on a joyride that ended when he reportedly crashed it.
The charge which was brought against the defendant, Isaacs Greaves (age and address not provided) on Friday, alleges that on October 30, at Freeman Street, Georgetown, he stole a Toyota Premio, which bears registration number HC 7776 and is valued $3.9 million. The car is the property of Craig Jacobus.
Greaves pleaded not guilty to the charge, which was read to him be Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in Georgetown.
However, Police Prosecutor Christopher Morris told the court that Greaves was sentenced to three years and was recently released. The prosecutor added that the man is also wanted along the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) for similar crimes.
As a result, Magistrate Daly refused bail and the man was remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned until November 25.
The court heard that Jacobus and Greaves are known to each other, since Jacobus would usually take his car to Greaves’ uncle mechanic shop, which he did on the day in question.
The next day, on October 31, at about 09:30hrs, upon checking for his car he noticed that it was missing. As a result, he made contact with the uncle, who told Jacobus that the defendant took the car and crashed it.
Upon hearing the news, the virtual complainant decided to venture to the East La Penitence Police Station to make a report, and as he was entering, he saw his car parked in the compound with severe damage.
