Dear Editor,
Service of Distinction is what we should bestow on Mr. K. J. Yassin, President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) for the years he captained the ship. It is quite evident that no captain ever journeys only over smooth waters, but it’s the rough waters that one manages to stir them self and crew out of all dangers, that makes you the wiser. It was first brought to my attention that Mr. K. J. Yassin will not be contesting the 2022 GOA Elections due to a voting exercise which prohibits him. So, in a nutshell, he passes on the torch.
Under his captaincy of the GOA, Guyana claimed the Gold Medal by Miss Aliann Pompey in the Women’s 400 m at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. That will be the 2nd highest after Olympic Bronze Medal won by Mr. Michael Parris. The least we can display in return is decency and respect during the process of the handing over of the torch. He graced my presence over the years in the fields of sports in Guyana with my service of photography coverages. It was indeed a rewarding experience and great lessons learnt.
Heading any sports fraternity in Guyana is one of the toughest job anyone could undertake. Where does Guyana get from here onwards with sports on the international circuit? I honestly don’t have an answer.
Sincerely,
Trevor Pemberton
