Dear Editor,
Many thanks for your Sunday editorial on residential areas. Lawless contractors hired by inconsiderate, recklessly exploitative proprietors, aided and abetted by toothless or incompetent local government officials continue their merry ways.
A construction is still taking place right up to the fence of a neighbour at 306 Lamaha Gardens despite recourse to the Mayor and City Council since it was first noticed. Who could have given permission for such an illegality? The only good news is that kudos must be given to the police for getting work stopped before dark so that residents can enjoy peace. Some residents had to go and protest at the noise of the construction work on Sundays before they complied.
Another construction at 51, Old Road, Eccles did the same thing. The NDC expressed their concern but was totally disregarded by the contractor. Again, who gave permission for it? The neighbour who must suffer this illegality had to get an interim injunction to stop the building, not removal of its wall right up to the fence. The lawyer said that the matter cannot be heard for about six months, because of the shortage of judges.
Residents have every right to articulate their concerns because it can also be an indication of the type of behaviour of future occupants of such structures.
Yours faithfully,
Alfred Bhulai
