(The Cricketer) West Indies great Carl Hooper has joined Adelaide Strikers as an assistant coach for the upcoming Big Bash.
Hooper, who captained West Indies and featured in 329 international matches, will assist Jason Gillespie, Strikers’ head coach.
Since retiring, he has held several coaching and mentoring roles, including posts with Antigua Hawksbills and Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League.
“I’ve supported the Strikers quite closely since the inception of the BBL and can see plenty of promise in the current list,” said Hooper, who lives in Adelaide and has also worked as a coach at local club Southern District.
“I’m looking forward to working with Dizzy (Gillespie) and put a few new ideas forward from my own experiences in the game and to bring the best out of the players. I can’t wait to get started.”
Gillespie added: “Carl has a wealth of experience from a playing and coaching perspective both here and across the globe. He has a fantastic ability to connect with people and always has the players’ best interests at heart.”
Hooper made his Test and ODI debuts in 1987 and became the first man to score 5,000 runs, take 100 wickets, claim 100 catches and play 100 in both formats.
In all, Hooper hit 20 international centuries and snared over 300 wickets with his off-spin.
