Regal Masters and Legends teams walked away champions in their respective Over-40 and Over-50 divisions while Guyana Knight Riders Ariel won the Open Category and 4R Lioness carted off with the spoils in the female division on Sunday in the Georgetown Softball Cricket League’s sixth Prime Minister’s T20 Cup.
At the National Stadium, Providence, in the most senior category, the Over-50 Legends division, Regal secured a two-wicket win over New York Softball Cricket League (NYSCL). Batting first, NYSCL piled up 146 for seven in their 20 overs with Nandlall Doodnauth hitting 32. Ken Sanichar (22) Troy Fernandes (19) and Ravi Sahadeo (19) also made vital contributions. Wayne Jones bagged 3-35 for Regal.
The division Most Valuable Player, Ramesh Narine, piloted the chase with 47 as Regal reached 147 for eight with four balls to spare. Player-of-the-Match, Rudolph Baker, made 33 not out while Jones returned to hit 18. Mahendra Hardyal saw his side over the line with 13 not out. Ronald Evelyn took 3-40 and Doodnauth capped off a good outing with 2-21.
In the Over-40 final, Regal Masters defeated Ariel Masters by nine wickets. Ariel posted 118 all out in 19.2 overs with Samuel Kingston top scoring with 53. Oslyn Batson and Shawn Hubbard chipped in with 17 and 12 respectively. Roy Persaud was the pick of the bowers, taking 4-24 with support from Chien Gittens (2-5).
In reply, Regal raced to 119 in just 13.1 overs losing one wicket along the way. Man-of-the-Match, Gittens returned to hit 43 not out while Khemchandra Dindial made 34 not out. Most Valuable Player, Patrick Rooplall (31) was the only batsman to be dismissed.
In the highly anticipated Open final, Ariel romped to an eight-wicket win over Name Brand to lift the title. Name Brand posted 143 for five with Sasenarine Sukhu and Ramnarine Judisteer hitting 56 and 53 runs respectively. Andy Narine returned 2-41 for Ariel.
Ariel then raced to 144 for two in 13.3 overs with Brian Mangar hammering a match-winning 94, earning him both the Player of the Match and the tournament’s Most Valuable Player awards. Shaz Grovesnor supported with 33.
In the female final, 4R Lioness cruised to a nine-wicket win over Trophy Stall Angels who made an even 100 for the loss of two wickets in 12 overs. 4R responded with 103 for one in 9.4 overs.
Alicia Allen was the principal scorer for Trophy Stall, hitting 46 not out while June Ogle scored 30 and Tremayne Smartt, 14. Tamika Willon smashed 40 and Amanda De Freitas struck 23 not out to see 4R over the line.
Wilson was named Player of the Match while Ogle was the Most Valuable Player.
Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips witnessed the conclusion of the three-day tournament and assisted in the presentation of trophy and prizes. He also congratulated the teams on their success.
