Dear Editor,
It will be remiss of me if I fail to publicly express my pleasure and great joy at the admission of Shivnarine Chandarpaul to the ICC’s cricket Hall of Fame. This richly deserved honour bestowed on ‘Tiger’ is timely when we need to remind young Guyanese and West Indians that in spite of the West Indies team decline in recent years, we can be inspired. Thanks to the exploits, consistency and grandeur of Shivnarine Chandarpaul.
It will be otiose for me to recite the details of his magnificent cricketing career, as so well set out in earlier letters and today’s Wednesday Stabroek News, an Editorial that should be read by all Caribbean sportsmen and women. Shiv has joined the rank of many cricketing giants. And we are all proud of him, we all love him, we all congratulate him. The grandeur of Shiv rests in the fact that he was the source of national pride of every Guyanese everywhere.
I first met Shiv when he was a teenager, when I visited Mahaica to meet one of his early adoring fans, the late Sonny Mohan, who recognized his potential and persuaded us to encourage him. It is right and proper that the street leading to the Office of our Head of State was named after him, an appropriate and lasting legacy. This means that his exploits will forever be remembered.
Sincerely,
Hamilton Green
