The second annual CAP Designs & Slay fashion show will hit the stage of the Theatre Guild on December 11, offering ‘fashion with a difference’ under the theme BOLD 2.
Founder Carl Peterkin told the Scene that he and his team are doing a combination of the elements of fashion, which include music and art, and that will make the difference.
“We wanted it to be on a wider platform … because without music fashion is boring and without colours which is art, fashion is plain, so it will be a fashion show with a difference,” he said.
According to the designer, in 2019 when the first show was hosted, it only sought to depict fashion. This time around, BOLD 2 will see a variety of new and young Guyanese artists displaying their fashion, soothing and at the same time bringing rhythm to the audience with their music and mesmerising the audience with the exquisite talent of their artistic pieces.
He said that a ‘Meet and Greet’ will be held before the show which will give the audience a chance to interact with the artists, keenly view the pieces and individually listen to their melodies.
Carl revealed that some of the designers who will exhibit pieces have been designing for years but never did a collection of their work. Additionally, he stated that the music the Guyanese artistes are prepared to play will be of different genres such as rap, soca, calypso, soul, R&B and much more. They include artistes who have participated in various competitions, such as the soca and calypso monarch and those who will be competing next year.
As he prepares to host the next grand event, the 25-year-old, who hails from Berbice but moved to Georgetown to grasp bigger and better opportunities, said his journey was not an easy one and that he is forever grateful for those who helped and continue to help him with attaining his accomplishments.
‘My journey as a fashion designer started when I moved to Georgetown,” he related. “I attended the Carnegie School of Home Economics where I gained basic knowledge of the practical part of designing which includes using the machine… and so on. There I met a few other designers, namely Randy Madray, Mwanza Glenn and Mark Roy Junior who helped me to develop my skills over the years.”
The CAP founder who has been designing for more than five years, said that although he had gained that knowledge, he was still scared to go out into the world and make his mark, until a sudden boldness overtook him. “Being a male Berbician it was very hard for me to come out as a fashion designer because of the stigma attached to males in this field. So I worked along with another designer as an assistant for a few months before branching off on my own. This is how my annual production BOLD was created. I was BOLD enough to show the world my talent and creativity and today I have no regrets,” he said.
Carl launched his first fashion show on December 15, 2019 at the Umana Yana where he had a fair turn out. However, plans for continuity were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic which resulted in the show being paused for two years. What felt like a setback for him then, actually became a breakthrough since he used the past two years to do research and is now on the verge of executing a bigger and better show.
On December 11, doors to the Theatre Guild will be open from 18:30 hrs. Tickets cost $3,000 and can be purchased at Jay’s Designs at the Merriman Mall, Mary’s Unique Creation at Cummings Street, A P Designs at Hastlington, East Coast of Demerara and other places around Georgetown.
