A mason was on Thursday arraigned at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged and remanded to prison over the murder of Sherwayne Underwood.
The defendant, Jamaal Abrams, 29, also called ‘Gold Teeth,’ of Lot 1343 Westminster, Parfaite Harmonie, WBD made his appearance before Magistrate Faith McGusty who read the charge to him.
Abrams was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until December 15th when the matter will be called again.
According to a police report, the 32-year-old Underwood and Abrams were drinking at Policeman Corner in La Parfaite Harmonie at about 03:00hrs on Tuesday when they got involved in an argument over some marijuana.
The police reported that the now dead man was using the marijuana and the suspect told him that it was “bush weed” and a fight eventually ensued between the two, which resulted in Abrams punching the man to the side of his head. He then allegedly whipped out a knife and dealt Underwood a stab to his abdomen.
The police said that after being stabbed, Underwood tried to run a short distance but collapsed on the ground.
He was picked in a conscious state by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Demerara Regional Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Abrams had escaped from the scene but was later recaptured at about 06:20hrs on the said date and according to the police, he admitted to stabbing the man in a video-recorded statement.
