A Venezuelan national was last Thursday placed on remand after he appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court and was charged with the murder of a man involved with his fiancée.

Carlos DaSilva, 27, also called Carlos Rodriguez, of Tuschen, New Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), appeared before Magistrate Crystal Lambert but was not required to plead to the indictable charge that was read to him.

The matter was adjourned until December 22 for the filing of statements.

Alfred, 37, who resided at First Street Kaneville Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was allegedly murdered by the man between 09:00hrs on November 13 and 09:00hrs on November 14 at Sand Hill Backdam, Cuyuni River.

The police said that investigation into the matter had revealed that the now deceased and the suspect were associates and worked in proximity at Sand Hill Backdam.

However, it is alleged that Alfred and DaSilva’s fiancée were involved in an intimate relationship for some time.

Alfred’s mother, 61-year-old Indra Singh, had told the police that on November 13th, at about 09:00hrs, she and her son were in their camp at Sand Hill Landing when DaSilva’s fiancée came and had breakfast with them. The woman and Alfred then left the camp en route to the backdam.

The mother of the deceased further related that on November 14, at about 09:00hrs, she went to search for her son since he had not returned home from the backdam. During her search, Singh said that she was informed by several persons that her son’s body was found at Sand Hill Backdam with injuries.

Upon hearing the devastating news, Singh called the Bartica Police Station and reported the matter. When the police arrived at the scene, Alfred’s motionless body was found clad in a white T-shirt and a brown three-quarter pants. He was also barefooted.

Police, who examined the man’s body, said that they saw lacerations to the left hand, a gaping wound located above his ear on the left side of his head, a gaping wound to the face which extended from over the top lip to the right eye and another gaping wound to his right side cheek.

DaSilva and his fiancée had gone into hiding after the killing but he was eventually captured at about 16:00hrs on November 15th in Bartica.
