A homeless man was on Wednesday sentenced to nine months imprisonment after appearing in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court and pleading guilty to a charge of simple larceny.
The charge against 58-year-old Daniel Guilfoir who has no fixed place of abode states that on November 10 at Light Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, he stole one washing machine valued at $110,000, property of Avina Ganroser.
According to the prosecutor, Shaundel Chapman, the accused is known to the virtual complainant since he would usually perform odd jobs for persons in the area.
On the day in question, it was said that Ganroser was washing clothes, went to check on the machine and saw the defendant carrying the appliance out of her yard. She started to raise an alarm but was quickly stopped by the man who threatened to harm her if she didn’t keep quiet.
When given a chance to explain himself, Guilfoir told Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time when he committed the offence.
The man then threw himself at the mercy of the court and begged the magistrate to be lenient with him. He said that he was willing to undergo any drug treatment course that may be offered to him during his time in prison.
Magistrate McLennan then referred him to one of the court’s probation officers.
