A 33-year-old man was taken before a city magistrate on Wednesday and released on $100,000 bail after denying a drug trafficking charge.
The charge against Salasie McFarlane of Lot 933 South Sophia, Georgetown, alleges that on October 22 at Stabroek Market Square on Water Street, he had in his possession 189.6 grammes of cannabis.
The court heard that on the day in question, a party of policemen were in the Stabroek Market when they saw the defendant holding a black plastic bag in his hands. As they approached him, the man dropped the bag and ran away.
The bag was picked up by one of the ranks and a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis was discovered in it.
According to the prosecutor, Shaundel Chapman, McFarlane was only arrested last week Monday, three weeks after the incident and charged on Wednesday in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court when he stood before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
The case was adjourned until December 14.
