Three knockout wins in as many nights earned Patrick Harvey the coveted best boxer (elite) award when the curtain came down on the Lennox Blackmore Intermediate tournament Sunday night at the National Gymnasium.
Buoyed by his boisterous Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) gym mates, the junior welterweight was the standout boxer for the three-night fixture which returned after a three-year hiatus.
After making light work of Steffan Caesar of the Republican Gym on Friday night, Harvey then returned to win again via another first round stoppage on Saturday night, this time against Nadir Walker of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
The slick southpaw added another ‘W’ to his record when he outclassed Junior Hyman of the Vergenoegen Boxing Gym on Sunday. Hyman, however snapped Harvey’s first round winning streak, fighting until the second round where after three standing counts, the referee stopped the contest.
Harvey, 19, was then inevitably named best elite boxer of the tournament.
While Harvey snatched the individual accolade, the Best Gym trophy was shared between GDF and the Guyana Police Force (GPF). Both outfits finished with nine points and jointly shared the award.
The FYF outfit finished runners-up with eight points. FYF’s Travis Inverary boxed his way to the best boxer (youth) award while top prospect, Shomario Isaacs copped the Best Boxer (school boys) trophy.
This year’ tournament attracted in excess of 50 boxers. Forty bouts were carded, 10 on the initial night and 15 each on Saturday and Sunday.
Next on the cards for the amateur boxers is the flagship National Open championships.
According to Technical Director of the Guyana Boxing Association, Terrence Poole, the highly-anticipated event is tentatively set for the third week in December at the same venue. (Emmerson Campbell)
