A fire of unknown origin yesterday damaged the staircase and other parts of an abandoned house located along Princess Elizabeth Road in New Amsterdam.
According to the information gathered, the two-storey wood and concrete house was owned by a now deceased doctor.
Stabroek News was told that after the house was left abandoned for some years, a vagrant identified as Aleacia Globewarner took up residence at the Lot 321 Princess Elizabeth Road premises.
According to Globewarner, around 10 am yesterday he was fast asleep at the location when he was awoken by heat coming from the southern section of the lower flat of the building.
He said that he threw some materials on the fire and quickly exited the building.
Two tenders from the New Amsterdam Guyana Fire Service were immediately summoned to the scene and were able to extinguish the fire quickly.
An investigation has since been launched into the cause of the fire.
