The family of Orin Bishop is now in mourning after his body was found at Greenfield Village on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) with his head almost severed and chops about his body.
They are calling for a thorough probe into the man’s death.
According to the Police, the body of 56-year-old Bishop, also known as “Gassa” or “Gas”, of Victoria Village, ECD was found on Sunday afternoon at about 4.15 pm at Greenfield South Access Road by a passerby.
Stabroek News yesterday spoke to the man’s wife, Jilyan Bishop who stated that although they had made a missing person’s report, they only became aware that he might have been found when they saw a Facebook post that described the clothing that he was last seen wearing.
“I was inside and my nephew was scrolling on Facebook and he said `aunt J what is the description of the clothes Orin was wearing’? So I said why you ask me that, so he said `man come nah’ and then I said he was last seen with a white jersey and a navy blue pants with some green flowers on it. So I ask he again what is it, then he said `man I scrolling Facebook and I see to the description they find somebody at Greenfield so it could be uncle Orin’”.
Bishop’s wife related that he had left home on Saturday afternoon at about 3.20 pm to attend a wake for one of his relatives at Bee Hive. Persons at the wake testified to seeing him there but were unaware of his whereabouts thereafter.
Jilyan said that although she didn’t see him for a couple of hours, she didn’t raise an alarm or become concerned since he would usually spend long periods at one of his friends’ home at Buxton.
“Why I didn’t raise an alarm is because he is a person like if he go out and he meet up with a friend that he ain’t see long they will go and have a nice time. So I claiming that probably he gone to a friend in Buxton where he does normally be. But when I look at the time on Sunday I turn to one of my daughters and I said `you know wuh, like something happen cause this is strange because Orin ain’t come home as yet and so something gat to happen because he don’t really stay out so late and so long’”
The grieving wife stated that after realizing that something might be amiss, she decided to venture to the Cove and John Police Station on Sunday at about 1.45 pm where she made a missing person’s report. She added that after her nephew saw the news of a body being found on Sunday afternoon, it instilled fear in them and as a result they went back to the said station late Sunday afternoon and asked about the body. They were told by a police officer that indeed they had received a call from someone informing them about a body. Several ranks went the scene.
She said that when they were allowed to identify the body, she saw numerous chops about Bishop’s body which appeared to be very deep.
“When we went and identify he body he had several chops all over his body… his face, his knee, the neck was severely severed, is like it could’ve barely hold on on his body, all on his elbow…”, she lamented.
The woman who described her husband as an “easy-going person” said that his death is a “brutal one” and in her opinion enough is not being done to find his killer(s). She added that she is appealing to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to conduct a thorough investigation in order to bring justice to her family.
“I do want the police to carry out a thorough investigation because that’s my husband and the way he was killed was really brutal…is brutal murder, like they chop and chop and chop, is like he went fighting for his life cause from the chops on his hand is like he try holding the cutlass or whatever and it cut and slice he hand deep deep, real cruel, is like they chop me husband like a dag,” the weeping wife said.
Jilyan said that she’s not aware of Bishop having any issues with anyone or what might have led to the chopping.
