Dear Editor,
Guyana does not have the capacity to absorb the wealth that is flowing in. Of course, if you speak to the Government, they would certainly say something else. The locals are ill exposed and lack leadership skills and qualifications. The country is vulnerable to foreign forces that are rushing to our shores. We have too much of doubts when we are placed in vital decision making – policy making positions in areas relating to oil and gas, because this is uncharted territory.
There are qualified Guyanese in the diaspora who can watch into their eyes and speak at the level of the new players here. However, not many are prepared to remigrate. Many are not prepared to hold subordinate positions to party loyalists and people who take directives from leaders who are not qualified in areas that they oftentimes interfere with. I know of many overseas-based who visited Guyana and left, complaining of a society in chaos. It is difficult for them to rent a car and drive on our lawless roads, especially when they were born and raised in a highly disciplined society.
Guyanese would be squeezed out of the real estate market. Capital is scarce for locals, but it is cheap and in abundance for Chinese, Trinidadians, and so on. The end result is that we would be reduced to the status of mere pawns in a society dominated by foreign players. Do not be too excited with the clearing of land and concrete structures.
Sincerely,
Fazal Gafoor
