Community activist Dr Veerasammy Ramayya is expected to be charged with a cybercrime offence on Thursday at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court based on comments made during one of his live social media broadcasts earlier this year.
Dr Ramayya, when contacted yesterday, confirmed that lawmen in Berbice on Friday visited his home and he was informed that he should appear in court on Thursday, December 1, to answer to a cybercrime charge. “If I had refused to sign, they could have arrested me and taken me to the station. I signed for self-bail”, Ramayya explained of a warrant that was presented to him.
According to Ramayya, based on the information provided to him as it relates to the charge, it is in regards to a topic he discussed on one of his live broadcasts on Facebook between May and June.
He said the issue is that of a sexual assault allegation leveled against a well-known figure in Region Six. Ramayya reportedly discussed the issue, which led to the alleged accused filing a report against him.
However, Ramayya yesterday lashed out at certain government officials as he claimed that he is being targeted after quitting his position as Coordinator for President Irfaan Ali’s Rapid Response Taskforce in Region Six.
In September, Ramayya resigned and alleged that there was massive corruption in the region and that when it was highlighted by him regional officials became upset.
Yesterday he accused members of the Guyana Police Force within Region Six of taking directives from government officials.
He stressed that he intends to fight the charge.
