Guyana won the Inter-Guiana Games Football title, defeating Suriname 2-0 yesterday at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
The contest exploded into life following a scoreless first-half interval, as Sandra Johnson and Amanda McKenzie found the back of the net.
The wily Johnson, who is a U17 Lady Jaguars international, broke the deadlock in the 48th minute. Racing onto a forward pass, Johnson slotted her effort past the onrushing goalkeeper into the far corner.
The second conversion occurred in the 63rd minute, as the lanky McKenzie found the back of the net with a sublime effort to secure the title. Awarded a free-kick approximately 40 yards from goal, McKenzie uncorked a powerful right-footed strike which sailed over the goalkeeper and settled into the back of the net.
Meanwhile Guyana lost to Suriname in both the male and female divisions when the discipline of Volleyball commenced on Friday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.
Watched by a small gathering, the Guyanese Girls were first to suffer defeat, as they lose in straight sets and by lopsided scores to their Dutch counterparts, who often controlled the sets with double-digit leads.
The Guyanese lost in the first set 11-25. Although Guyana improved in the second stanza, they went down to Suriname 19-25. The Dutch-speaking nation then capped off the result, as Guyana lost by an 11-25 score-line in the third set.
In the Male section, Guyana lost 1-3 in a dogged showing. Guyana lost by close margins of 20-15, 23-25, and 18-25.
The locals did prevail in one set by a 25-21 score. Up to press time, the final round of matches were underway at the same venue.
