Marks, Dos Santos set records at Nationals

Athletics action in the 60th edition of the National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships continued Tuesday at the National Track and Field Centre at Edinburg.

Day Three was highlighted by the 400m heats, the 4x 100m relay heats and the field athletes, most notably the record breakers. 

They included student athlete, Esther Marks and teacher, Osafo Dos Santos.

Esther Marks, representing Upper Demerara/ Kwakwani (District 10) obliterated the under-20 girls javelin record of 35.38.

Marks, representing Upper Demerara/ Kwakwani (District 10) obliterated the under-20 girls javelin record of 35.38 metres set by Prudence Codrington four years ago, registering a new record of 39.96 metres.

She bested fellow podium dwellers Sheniah Joseph (22.99 metres) of North West and Preya Yhap (19.22 metres) of the Corentyne.

Dos Santos, who holds the shut put male teachers 21-30 record, set a new 31-40 male teachers record in the shot put. Dos Santos, of New Amsterdam/Canje (District 15) recorded a best throw of 16.42m to rewrite the record books.

Elsewhere in the field, national sprinter, Keliza Smith claimed the Girls U-20 long jump gold.

She then returned to easily win her 400m heats.
