The Dharm Shala, Home of Benevolence for All Races, is once again appealing for donations to continue its daily operations of feeding, housing and clothing those in need ahead of its 102nd year anniversary.
In a statement, Dharm Shala Vice President Pamela Ramsaroop has said that even with its limited staff and finance, the institution has always extended its arms to the aged, some of whom have lived in the home for 40+ years free of charge. It continues to provide three meals daily in addition to other amenities, such as access to water, electricity, and sanitary facilities.
The statement said that while the Dharm Shala is more than ever a witness of man’s inhumanity to man and unkindness, the Ramsaroop family continues to give full-time voluntary service to those who seek its help.
The Dharm Shala depends on donations from the public as well as a government subvention of $1.5 million to carry out its mission at its Georgetown and Berbice locations. All other expenses are borne by the Ramsaroop family.
“We thank god for those who have seen it fit to support this charity here and in Berbice. May god bless them for always answering this appeal over all these years we remain ‘our brothers’ keeper,” the statement added.
It noted that donations can be sent to: The Treasurer, Dharm Shala, 140 King Edward Street, Albouystown or Edward Boyer, the Chief Executive Officer of National Hardware (Guyana) Limited, Water Street, Georgetown.
