The long-awaited modernization works on the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) has commenced.
This is according to a post made on the Facebook page of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport yesterday.
According to the post, when the upgrades are completed, the CASH will become Guyana’s first air conditioned facility and will include the installation of bucket seats.
The post went on to state that the first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed in eight months while the other phases will conclude in early 2024.
During this year’s budget presentation, it was revealed that of the $450 million budgeted to the National Sports Commission (NSC), approximately $130 million will be spent on upgrades to the iconic venue on Homestretch Avenue.
Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony, who acted in the capacity of Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., due him being unwell, disclosed that $80M will be spent on the installation of bucket seats.
Currently, the Sports Hall, Guyana’s premier indoor sport facility, has wooden benches built on steel structures as seats.
In addition, $30 million will be for an Air Conditioning system and $20 million to refurbish the floor. Out of this year’s $552.9 billion budget, sport has been allocated $3.15 billion with a capital of $2.4 billion.
