Guyana’s three-member team has arrived in Bogota, Colombia, on a quest to be among the podium finishers at the ongoing World Weightlifting Championships.
The annual event which started on Monday and concludes on December 16, serves as a qualifier for next year’s Pan American Games as well as the Olympic Games in 2024.
It will feature an array of Olympic and world champions and world record holders over 12 days of competition at the Gran Carpa Américas Corferias Convention Centre.
The local outfit includes lifters, Delice Adonis and Shammah Noel accompanied by their coach, Sean Cozier.
Adonis is set to spring into action on Saturday in the women’s 64kg class, while Noel is scheduled to compete a day later in the men’s 81kg class The event is historic for Guyana since it’s the first time in over 50 years that a local outfit has participated in the World Championships. It is also historic for the host nation since it’s the first time Colombia is home to the fixture since its introduction in 1905.
The Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association thanked the Guyana Olympic Association and Fitness Express for assisting in making possible, the participation of the lifters at this important event.
Note: Weightlifting is a sport that tests the strength and technique of athletes through lifting weights. Weightlifters are broken into bodyweight categories and compete against each other within their category. A weightlifting competition consists of two events: the snatch and the clean and jerk.
