Dear Editor,
On Wednesday, Patentia, West Bank Demerara experienced a flood after 15:00 hours which lasted until 19:30 hours before signs of withdrawal of the floodwater.
After the closure of the Wales estate, it appears that the once cultivated cane areas abandoned are contributing to the floods because managed waterways in the backdam are now neglected and rainwater flows to Patentia, there being no place for proper and alternative discharge.
Drains in the Patentia area are neglected except for an occasional “top cut and wide spread,” by the unit charged to ensure proper drainage in the area.
It is unfair to us that after a few hours of rainfall we are severely inconvenienced by floodwaters in a location where this was not the norm.
It appears that an installed pump is no longer operational.
Yours respectfully,
