Cabinet has decided to grant an 8% increase in wages to sugar workers.
Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo announced the decision at a news conference on Friday at the Office of the President.
“The sugar workers will also get an 8% increase,” Jagdeo said after referencing the announced payout of the across-the-board increase to public servants. “We decided that.”
It is unclear whether the increase was agreed to by the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), which has been engaging the executive management of Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) in annual negotiations.
GuySuCo workers last year received a 7% wages and salary increase like public servants.
The increase for public servants has been criticised by the Guyana Public Service Union as a result of the continued failure of the government to engage the union in negotiations.
