Guyana hockey teams suffer mixed fortunes in B/dos

Guyana’s hockey teams suffered mixed fortunes on the opening day of their four match International Hockey men’s tour of Barbados, incurring a draw and a defeat on Thursday at Wildey Park.

In the U21 junior division, the Guyanese battled to a 1-1 stalemate with their Barbadian counterparts. Darren Williams handed Barbados the lead in the 23rd minute while Samuel Woodroffe equalized in the 49th minute.

In the senior section, Guyana lost to Barbados 0-4. Kris Holder tallied a double in the second and 60th minute while Marlon Daniel and Shomari Inniss netted in the 10th and 69th minute respectively.

Head coach Robert Fernandes said expressed his pleasure with the junior team’s performance.

“I was happy with the junior’s performance, we started cautiously but we grew into the game and I am pleased with the boys’ response after we conceded. We knew the senior match was going to be much tougher considering 14 of our players were making their international debut and Barbados definitely executed better than us today. We will make some tactical adjustments and I expect to see the players adapt and learn from today’s experience,” he declared

Up to press time, the team was scheduled to face off in the second round of matches. The third round is pencilled for today. All the fixtures will be staged at the same venue.
