The KFC Goodwill Schools Football Series will commence tomorrow at the National Training Centre, Providence, due to the inclement weather. All six competing teams, two of whom emanate from Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago respectively, have arrived on local shores.
This was confirmed by Petra Organization Co-Director Troy Mendonca during a pre-tournament briefing yesterday at the KFC Vlissengen Road office. The official team uniforms were also displayed at the forum.
Mendonca stated that the tournament has been shifted to the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) facility, and will commence tomorrow with a doubleheader.
Further, the weather conditions will determine if the tournament is staged entirely at the aforementioned venue or is relocated to the original facility which is the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown.
KFC’s Marketing Manager, Pamela Manasseh, said, “It’s a privilege for KFC to be a part of Petra and the KFC Goodwill sponsorship for football. We look forward for more things from you,” adding that the company is committed to continuing to serve as a sponsor of the burgeoning event.
“We’re going to make sure that we are doing all that we can with these young athletes and they’re making an example to follow, that we will encourage them, support them. And I hope you guys are leading by example because guess what, we want the best out of you.”
The six competing teams will initially contest a round-robin stage round comprising two zones of three.
Group-A comprises newcomer St. Benedict College of Trinidad and Tobago, Golden Grove, and DC Caesar Fox [formerly Waramadong]. Group-B consists of GuyOil League winner, Christianburg/Wismar, Annai Secondary and SVB Academy of Suriname. At the conclusion of the group round, the top two finishers in each pool will advance to the semi-final section.
In the tournament opener at 14:00 hours, Milo and GuyOil winner, Christianburg/Wismar, will oppose defending champion Champions Annai Secondary, with the feature contest pitting Golden Grove Secondary against DC Caesar Fox [formerly Waramadong] from 16:00 hours.
Matches will now be staged on Saturday and Monday December 19 at the same venue. Meanwhile, the Petra Organization has extended condolences to the family and friends of Lorraine Barker-King who unfortunately passed away on December 3.
At the time of her passing, Barker-King served in the capacity as Administrator of the Allied Arts Unit of the Ministry of Education, and was a central figure in the Petra Organization, acquiring the approval to stage multiple school football tournaments. She will be interred today.
