The late Nazim ‘Papo’ Haniff set two distinct records 10 years apart at the Lusignan Golf Course (LGC), as he became the youngest ever Open champion, and did the double circuit over 18 holes for a gross 64 including six under par in 1987.
Haniff etched his name in the local history books, becoming the youngest ever winner of the Lusignan Open at the tender age of 18 in 1977. His second round, the double circuit for a gross of 64 including six under par, was achieved ten years later at the age of 28.
His second feat, a triumphant display, occurred at the Bridgestone Trophy Competition and bettered the previous joint record of 67 held by Basil Sookram, and himself. Haniff’s outstanding display included six birdies and 12 pars, as he recorded 31 and 33 respectively on the double nine holes play.
Haniff, who started his golf career as a caddie, also won the Lusignan Open six years in a row in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, and 1987. He also had overseas competitive stints, after having played in several tournaments in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) and Jamaica. Haniff won the Benson & Hedges Tournament in T&T in 1986 and 1987.
He was also the resident professional for Moengo Club in Suriname.
The LGC would like to pay tribute to Haniff for his outstanding achievements.
