Zaheer Hussein who was accused of killing his former father-in-law, Alexie Gomes back in 2020 has been found not guilty of the offence.
Following hours of deliberations yesterday afternoon, the 12-member jury returned its verdict, unanimously acquitting Hussein of the capital offence.
He had been on trial before Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall at the High Court in Demerara.
The charge against him had alleged that he murdered Gomes on June 25th, 2020.
Background
Hussein was accused of beating 54-year-old Gomes with a piece of wood on Father’s Day of 2020.
Two days after the assault, Gomes fell ill and had to be hospitalized and later succumbed there.
Stabroek News had previously reported that on June 21st, 2020 Gomes left his Lot 6 Riverview, Ruimveldt, Georgetown address to purchase beers at a nearby shop.
According to reports, on his way to make the purchase, he noticed his former son-in-law with his grandson and he decided to approach the two to speak to his grandson.
The father of the child, however, was not pleased and an altercation ensued during which the assault was alleged to have occurred.
Gomes had returned to Guyana from New York the month before, but was forced to remain here after the closure of international airports, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which prevented him from returning to the United States.
