Businessman JW Potter was instrumental in British Guiana defeating Barbados in the inaugural Inter-Colonial Golf Championship in 1932.
The entrepreneur whose name was mostly associated with the hardware industry on local soil, was one of the nation’s top golfers and played an integral role in the historic victory, which was hosted at the courses of the Demerara and Georgetown Golf Clubs.
Potter warmed up for the historic event with a unique distinction following a score of 36, which was the bogey for the course over nine holes by having a four score for each hole. The bogey for the course for each hole reads: 4, 5, 3, 4, 5, 5, 3, 4, and 3=36. Potter’s score was 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, and 4= 36.
He was also the runner-up to TR Cowell in the 1932 British Guiana Amateur Golf championship. The 1932 Amateur Golf Championship results as follows:
