The bodies of two children who drowned last night in the Pomeroon River were recovered this morning.
Dead are Reshanna Atkinson,5, and Josiah Atkinson, one-year-old. They were both asleep when the boat capsized.
The tragedy occurred around 8.30 pm in the vicinity of St Monica in the Upper Pomeroon River. The parents of the children survived.
According to Bhinauth Atkinson, he, his wife Novita Atkinson, 23, and the children were heading home when the mishap occurred. He said that the engine of the boat collided with a floating object and by the time he realized it his entire family was in the water.
“It was terrifying. Everything happened so fast, my little babies they were asleep and my wife and I struggled. It was tragic I can scream when I remember” the husband said.
The children were not wearing lifejackets.
