Twenty-eight-year-old Javed Ragnauth, one of the four persons who were busted by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) earlier in this month was yesterday sentenced to 4 years and 6 months behind bars after he pleaded guilty to two narcotic charges.
Ragnauth of Lot 89 Smythe Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, was sentenced yesterday by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court when he made his appearance from the Lusignan Prison.
The defendant was sentenced to 4 years and fined $6,336,000 for trafficking 3.312 kilograms of cocaine which had a street value of $4,968,000 and was also sentenced to 6 months and fined $129,000 for trafficking 1.520 kilograms of cannabis which had a street value of $656,000. Both sentences are to run concurrently.
On December 2nd, CANU had intercepted four persons at the aforementioned address where the quantities of cocaine and cannabis were found.
They had said that their ranks were at the time conducting a surveillance operation in the vicinity of Church Street, where they had observed a suspicious transaction.
As such, they pursued one of the suspects to his residence at Smythe Street, Charlestown, Georgetown where a subsequent search was conducted on the property. The search uncovered five brick-like parcels, suspected to be cocaine, and two plastic bags containing suspected cannabis.
Along with Ragnauth, the discovery had led to the arrest of Samantha Nasemento, 32, Yancy Garraway, 35, of Lot 2 North Road, Bourda, Georgetown, and Charles Jones, 48, a miner, of Lot 451 Four-Mile Housing Scheme, Bartica, who were later released after the Ragnauth had pleaded guilty to the charges.
Ragnauth was unrepresented while CANU was represented by their prosecutor, Richard Harris.
