Detective Constable Courtney Sampson yesterday snagged the Best Cop award in Region Six and urged persons joining the force to do so on good faith and to work hard and not be corrupt.
In an interview with Stabroek News, 27-year-old Sampson who hails from the East Bank Berbice area, yesterday said he felt a lot of joy receiving the sought-after award. He added, “but before you can get joy you have to work hard and you have to sweat…”
Sampson who joined the Guyana Police Force in 2015, relayed that he wanted to serve his country and solve crime. “And seeing a lot of drug users out there and how it affected the youths that is one of the main concept that motivate me to join the police force.”
He added, “In order for you to do your job, enjoy what you do and help people out there you have to love what you do and everything comes with hard work.”
Questioned about challenges and sacrifices this year, Sampson joked that he’s had a lot of sleepless nights. “Sometimes you have to walk miles to get things done but in order for you to get what you want you have to work hard”, he stressed.
He added that the award received motivates him to work even harder, as he urged ranks and others joining the force to “be educated, work hard, don’t be corrupt, serve and protect.”
Taking a strong stance against corruption, Sampson urged “be positive, don’t let anything out there full your eye… What you working for you should accept because when you joined the work you know this was the salary so be contented and work hard.”
Commander of Region Six, Shivpersaud Bacchus in recommending Sampson for the award said he was “hardworking and has excellent interactive communication skills, and has the ability to delegate tasks along with carrying out any given task.”
He noted, Sampson was knowledgeable and maintained a positive attitude, “and is very flexible when possible. He plays several sports and engages in community relations activities regularly.”
