Martinez Rajas, age 24, an inmate at the Timehri Prison was found hanging in his cell this morning.
Rajas, a Venezuelan, was found unresponsive during a security check at 05:20 hrs with a sheet around his neck from the ceiling, a statement from the Guyana Prison Service said.
A nurse on duty was immediately summoned and she confirmed that the inmate was unresponsive.
Thereafter, the police were summoned and the body was escorted to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where the inmate was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.
Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot said an investigation is currently being conducted by the police and prison authority.
Rajas was remanded to prison since April 28 for the Possession of Stolen Articles.
