Two brothers were yesterday charged with the murder of land surveyor, Ricky Ambrose and remanded to prison.
Randel Layne and Mario Moses of Goed Intent, West Bank Demerara appeared before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
They were charged with murdering Ambrose on December 18 on the Guana Sand Trail, Cuyuni River, Region Seven.
The brothers, who are both gold miners were not required to plead to the indictable charge. They were remanded to prison and the case was adjourned to January 31, 2023.
Stabroek News was told that the brothers were arrested over the weekend and questioned during which they reportedly provided investigators with details about the murder.
Information reaching this newspaper revealed that they said that on the day in question, Ambrose went to their mining camp and told them that they had to remove from the land on which they were working.
They alleged that Ambrose also shot at one of their pumps and threatened them if they were still there when he returned.
As a result, the brothers told detectives that they armed themselves with two pieces of wood and went to the trail where they waited for Ambrose behind a tree.
They added that as Ambrose approached, one of them struck him off his ATV while the other stabbed him several times about his body.
The brothers said they then relieved Ambrose of his firearm and walked through the nearby bushes where they threw it into the creek before returning to their camp.
Reports had revealed that at about 5am on Sunday, December 18, forty-year-old Ambrose of Profit Square, South Ruimveldt left Arimu Landing en route to ‘Guana’ Sand Landing with his ATV, CK 3965.
Hours later, a 24-year-old miner was heading from his work ground to the camp ground and was walking along the Arimu Trail when he observed a body on the ground with multiple injuries. The body was about 20 feet from the ATV.
His licensed firearm and a quantity of raw gold and cash were missing.
A post-mortem examination later revealed that Ambrose died from multiple injuries.
The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association had called on the police to do a thorough investigation into the murder.
