A man was yesterday released on $150,000 bail after he allegedly breached a contract with a Georgetown taxi base and went on a joyride to Essequibo for several days with the company’s car.
The charge against 26-year-old Rudolph Narayan of ‘C’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown, states that on December 15 at Fifth Street Alberttown, Georgetown, while solely being entrusted with a Toyota motorcar valued at $1.4 million, property of Terry Babulall, he fraudulently converted it to his own use and benefit.
Yesterday, the court heard that Babulall, who is the owner of Efficiency Taxi Service, had entrusted his motorcar to Narayan under certain conditions which included that he was not to leave the Georgetown jurisdiction and that he was to pay $6,000 per day on the taxi to which he (Narayan) agreed.
However, on December 16, the defendant could not be found. According to Prosecutor Shundel Chapman, Babulall made several calls to the man’s phone and all went unanswered. He also visited the defendant’s address and was told that he was not at home.
On December 24, police in Regional Division #2 acting on information received, initiated a road block in front of the Suddie Police Station where Narayan was intercepted with the car and arrested.
He was then escorted to Georgetown where he was placed in custody and taken before the court.
Narayan pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on $150,000 bail. The matter has been adjourned until January 18.
