Ritchie siblings, Mekhi and Breann, who are emerging talents in basketball and swimming respectively, are laser focused ahead of the 2023 season, following developmental growth in 2022.

This was affirmed during a brief interview yesterday. Although attempting a plethora of disciplines inclusive of karate, football, hockey, golf, track and field and lawn tennis, Mekhi, 14 and Breann, 12, have settled on basketball and swimming respectively, and have the ultimate goal of joining the professional ranks in their respective sport disciplines.

Mekhi’s basketball journey commenced with Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) under the guidance of national coach Lugard Mohan and has led to tremendous improvements in his all-around game which resulted in the decision to focus solely on the discipline.

Although he did suffer a setback in failing to make the grade for the 2022 Inter-Guiana Games roster, Mekhi disclosed that his resolve to hone his craft has further strengthened. Breann, on the other hand, has shown tremendous growth in her discipline following her initial training routine with Coach Damini Thomas of the Silver Shark Athletic Swim Club.

This resulted in her promotion to practice under the tutelage of Senior-Coach Leon Seaton Sr., which led to the acquisition of medals won at the Sea Otters Swim Meet and the IGG competition.

Her next aim is to be promoted to train under Coach Sean Baksh, which will further improve and hone her abilities due a more rigorous regimen.

Both athletes stated that training in the United States of America is an objective that will be realised in the near future as it provides the requisite opportunities to enter the professional realm.

The duo further stated that they appreciate the strides being made by the government in advancing sport, adding that they hope the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Charles Ramson Jr., continues to show unwavering support and dedication for the development of the local sporting fraternity.
