The non-collection of garbage and delayed service has resulted in heaps of refuse waiting to be disposed of in parts of the city.
Stabroek News visited the southeastern corner of Alexander Street and North Road yesterday and witnessed a large, unsightly pile of garbage (likely the result of a clean-up effort) dumped on the roadside. Vendors in the area, who all wished to remain anonymous, complained that “the scent is really affecting us and we would love for it to be cleaned up before the week is out. When asked how long the garbage has been there, they responded that it has been there for several weeks.
Solid Waste Management Director, Walter Narine was contacted and told about the current situation. He assured that the pile of garbage will be cleared.
Other locations such as Hunter Street in Albouystown, Stabroek Market, Water Street, and East Ruimveldt Front Road were visited by this newspaper and piled up garbage at the roadside was observed. To add to these woes, weekly residential garbage pickups in many parts of the city especially in southern Georgetown are behind schedule, in some cases by as much as one week. Some residents have resorted to paying for pickups by private concerns.
