One witness has been called to the stand to testify in the trial of 35-year-old photographer, Keron Bruce, of Soesdyke Back Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) who was charged last year with cybercrime.

The witness and virtual complainant, Leroy Smith, a reporter, had testified a week ago in the Diamond\Grove Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Sunil Scarce who is presiding over the trial. The trial will resume on February 7 at which point other persons are expected to testify.

In January of 2022, Bruce was slapped with the charge which reads that on January 25 at Soesdyke, he allegedly used a computer system to disseminate information about Smith, knowing same to be false and which subjected Smith to public ridicule, contempt, hatred or embarrassment.

At that initial court proceeding, Bruce, who is being represented by attorney Bernard DaSilva, was granted bail in the sum of $100,000.

The cybercrime charge came after an animated video was released on social media from an account called ‘Mudwata’ where statements were made about Smith.

As a result, Bruce, and others who are allegedly behind the animations, were arrested but only he was charged. It was said that a search was conducted on the defendant’s house and some of his electronic devices were seized and taken to assist in the investigation.
