An Upper Berbice River farmer has been arrested after he was found in possession of cannabis (marijuana) at a roadblock.
A Guyana Police Force release yesterday informed that Compton Allicock, a 58-year-old farmer of Unamco Junction, Upper Berbice River, was detained by ranks from the Ituni Police Station after he was allegedly nabbed at a roadblock with more than 2,000 grams of marijuana.
According to the release, the police at around 18:25 hrs Friday, were on a ‘stop and search’ exercise in front of the Ituni Police Station when they intercepted a white Toyota motorcar bearing registration PZZ 7500, driven by a 34-year-old electrician of Airy Hall, Mahaicony along with three passengers.
Allicock, was seated next to the driver with a pink haversack on the floor of the car between his feet. A police rank informed the occupants of the car of his intention to search their person and belongings, to which they consented. When Allicock was searched, there was discovered in the crotch of his pants, a bulky black plastic bag containing leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis. A further search of his haversack unearthed a quantity of cassava among which were four bulky black plastic parcels and one blue plastic parcel. The parcels contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems, also suspected to be cannabis.
Allicock was then told of the offence committed and cautioned. He reportedly admitted possession of the marijuana saying, “Officer, I was taking this thing [marijuana] to make a fine hustle because things lil hard.”
He was arrested and escorted to the Ituni Police Station, where the suspected cannabis was weighed in his presence and amounted to just over 2,041 grams.
Nothing of evidential value was found on the driver and the other two passengers, and after giving statements, they were allowed to go.
The suspect is currently in custody pending further investigation.
