Sixteen of the country’s strongest football teams will clash from January 20 in a lucrative knockout tournament.
The East Coast Mash Cup tournament will kick off next Friday at the Golden Grove Ground.
The 16-team tournament, hosted by Golden Grove Dynamic FC, will see the winning team earing the first prize of $500,000.
The runner up team will pocket $250,000, third place $150,00 and fourth place $100,000.
According to the organisers, the concept behind the tournament is for the rebirth of football on the East Coast of Demerara.
The organisers are grateful for support shown teams outside of the East Coast area, adding that it demonstrates the collective effort needed for the sustenance and development of football in Guyana.
Rosignol United is the only Berbice side in the tournament which boasts some four teams from Georgetown.
The City-based teams are the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), the Guyana Police Force (GPF) FC, Fruta Conquerors and Santos FC.
Expected to give the City teams a run for their money will be reigning ‘West Side’ Champions, Slingerz FC, who will lead the West Demerara pack, a pack which which includes trophy hungry sides such as Den Amstel FC and Pouderoyen FC.
Golden Grove Dynamic FC, Victoria Kings, Paradise FC, Melanie FC, Buxton United, Buxton Stars, Ann’s Grove United, and Mahaica Determinators will lead the East Coast Demerara’s challenge to the other contenders.
The tournament will be played on a straight win or go home format.
The tournament will kick off with Victoria Kings taking on Mahaica Determinators from 6:00 pm, followed by a clash between home side Dynamic FC and Buxton United.
All the matches will be played at the Golden Grove Ground.
The other playing nights are
January 22, 27, 29, February 3, 5, and 10.
The grand finale will take place February 18.
