A New Amsterdam prison officer was yesterday released on $100,000 bail after she was charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Sarafina Pitt, 29, a prison officer attached to the New Amsterdam Prison and of 51 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Magistrate Renita Singh where she was charged with possession of a narcotic for the purpose of trafficking which occurred on December 30 at the New Amsterdam Prison, Penitentiary Walk, to wit 604 grams of cannabis.
She pleaded not guilty to the charge and was placed on $100,000 bail.
She will return to court on February 21st.
Pitt was arrested just around 5. 50 am on December 30.
According to information gathered, police received a report from the prison that the woman was found with a quantity of cannabis within the guard hut area.
Stabroek News had previously reported that a search conducted on the prison officer by the Prison Authorities found that she had a black plastic bag wrapped with transparent plastic containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stem suspected to be cannabis in her handbag.
The woman and the items were handed over to lawmen after they arrived at the location.
The suspected cannabis was weighed and amounted to 604 grams.
