A motorcyclist died after crashing into a shipping container that was parked on the side of the road.

Twenty-four-year-old Romano Ramdeen of Lot 6 Backhouse, Kokertop, Patentia, West Bank Demerara died on Thursday night after his motorcycle, CK 1359 crashed into a container while riding on the Wales Public Road. His family say that the container was encroaching on the roadway and the community need proper roads and lights.

It was mentioned that several complaints have been made by the community to the Neighbourhood Democratic council (NDC) about these issues but no action has been taken. The family is saying that the accident could have happened to anyone in the area.

The dead man’s mother, Tajmattie Ramdeen, told the Sunday Stabroek that she’s unable to say if her son was speeding but what she’s sure about is the container that Romano collided with was removed from the scene the next morning.

She noted that there were two containers at the location, since the resident who resided there had another one parked there for many days and later replaced it with the one that Romano collided with. And that has been there for many months now.

Tajmattie explained that the container being parked there has been a problem for residents in the area for a while now and that some cyclists would collide with it. She added that it was placed on the parapet by a resident who is reported to be storing his bikes inside. She said that what happened to her son could have happened to anyone given the way the container was parked.

She added that the lights in the area need fixing and proper roads in the area were needed.

According to a police report, as a result of the collision, the biker was flung against the container, sustaining several injuries about his head and body.

He was picked up by public-spirited persons in an unconscious state and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The body is at Ezekiel Funeral Parlour awaiting a post- mortem examination.
