The PPP/C Government has awarded 41 contracts to construct rigid pavement concrete roads on the Essequibo River island of Wakenaam.
Speaking to residents and contractors on the island on Friday, Deodat Indar, Minister within the Ministry of Public Works noted that the projects are a commitment of President Irfaan Ali.
According to a release from the Ministry, the majority of the projects cater for the strengthening of the internal road network on the Essequibo island. It also includes the construction of some of the island’s perimeter roads.
Indar encouraged the contractors to rethink how they will source raw materials to build the roads, citing shortages nationwide.
He further encouraged the contractors to submit samples of the reef sand from the island for testing to determine its suitability to be used on the road projects.
The release said that Wakenaam is home to approximately 4,000 residents and its main economic activity is agriculture.
The announcement about Wakenaam roads followed another about its sister island, Leguan. Indar said that $865m in concrete roads will be built on the island.
