The Guatemalan Govern-ment is preparing to establish an embassy here, President Irfaan Ali yesterday announced.
Ali noted that the embassy will become operational by March of this year.
The disclosure came in light of questions yesterday from the press on international co-operation to support the sugar industry.
Though he did not release any further information on the embassy here, Ali hinted that the country is likely to aid in the restructuring of the sugar sector. The Central American country is a major sugar producer.
“They are very interested in supporting us in in terms of sugar and GuySuCo (Guyana Sugar Corporation),” he said.
According to the President, as his government works to restructure the sugar corporation and make it profitable, they are aiming to import persons with technical expertise.
“We are open to private sector involvement, and any private sector involvement. We have had expressions of interest, but now we have to work on getting the technical capability to support our local management team. So push this company fast into profitability…” Ali added as he stated that the Guatema-lans are also interested in addressing these shortcomings.
The President said that there was also discussion with India for support in the sector.
