The calendar has flipped to 2023 and Elton Dharry yesterday provided the name of his potential opponent for the tentative March 25 restart of boxing here. Boxing starved fans will soon be satiated with a card comprising title fights tentatively set for the National Stadium and Dharry who will headline the event, stated that he will match gloves with Hugo Hernandez.
“After a long wait, we finally agreed on March 25 against Hugo Hernandez from Mexico,” said Dharry yesterday. The USA-based super flyweight was scheduled to be in the ring here late last year fighting for the British Commonwealth title, but negotiations fell through.

“I am in gym and training and I am just waiting for the boxing board to put things together,” he declared.
Dharry will match gloves against the game Mexican for the WBC Silver belt. Hernandez, 27, record stands at 19-7-1. He won his last fight last August via the KO route in the first round.
The 37-year-old orthodox fighter knows that Father Time is ticking on his career and plans to put on a show in front of the local boxing starved fans.
“It is another great opportunity for me to fight at home in a big fight and it would be good for Guyana and its boxing as well, but right now I can only do what is in my power and that is stay training and staying focused.”
Dharry, who has been calling out world champions in his division, fought for the WBA Super flyweight title in 2019. However, he lost to Andrew Maloney in the latter’s hometown of Melbourne, Australia in a controversial ninth-round stoppage after the ring side doctor stopped the fight which Dharry said he was dominating due to an eye injury.
Dharry improved his record to 26 (15KOs)-6-1 with an exciting decision win against Orlando Penalba last April at the stadium and reiterated that his ultimate dream is to win a world title for Guyana.
