Former member of the Guyana Cricket Board, Roger Harper in a press conference held yesterday at the Muslim Youth Organisation revealed that the current Guyana Cricket Board executives have extended their term from two years to four years and in his opinion, against the Cricket Administration Act.
“The Guyana Cricket Act does state GCB should hold election every two years but I am surprised that most of the public may not be aware that contrary to the Cricket Act that the Guyana Cricket Board executives saw the opportunity to extend, without having one election since the installation of the Board under the new cricket act to extend the term from two years to four years,” Harper explained. Schedule 1 10 (a) of the Guyana Cricket Administration Act Chapter 21:03 10 speaks to elections and states, “Elections shall be held biennially for two trustees and the following positions on the Executive Committee of the Guyana Cricket Board, this is to say the President, First Vice-President, Second Vice-President, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasure, Chairperson of the Marketing Committee, Public Relations Officer, Chairperson of the Competitions Committee.”
Harper noted, “So in my opinion, it seems as though the work of Parliament is a joke, because so much time, money and energy was put into coming up with a Cricket act, which was said at the time was said to guide and run all cricket event, all that was sought of conflicts we had and then the body elected under the act changes the term from two to four years.”
Harper reiterated that the then President of Guyana consented to the act back in 2014 but is unclear about Parliament’s knowledge on what cricket administration is facing. “These things are done in a very underhand and sneaky manner, again contrary to the Cricket Act was the fact that Hilbert Foster who was elected as vice-president of the Guyana Cricket Board with responsibility for Cricket Development was also chosen as a Director of Cricket West Indies,” he said. He recalled that Foster was removed as a representative on the West Indies Cricket Board and replaced by the then, newly elected President of Essequibo Cricket Board.
“Parliament is not asking any questions, we are trampling on the act,” he reasoned.
