A few days ago, I was completing an interview for a story I was working on. The person began to make a point about the government and quickly thought better of it. “These days, you have to frighten again to say anything.” This is someone who is by no means tame in their criticisms, but they recognized that self-preservation means that certain criticisms are off the table. It is something that I have been thinking about a lot as I retrace Guyana’s long and violent history toward protestors and those who are seen as troublemakers.
