Oniel Benn known as `Hot Skull’ of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, last evening surrendered to the police.
He turned himself in at the New Amsterdam Police Station.
Benn allegedly opened fire at lawmen along the Corentyne Highway on Monday evening, and after police answered with gunshots he reportedly dropped his firearm and fled the scene.
It was suspected that he was injured after blood was noticed on the road. According to a police source, Benn surrendered last evening in the presence of a relative. The source noted, that four gunshot injuries were observed on the suspect’s body, and that he would be taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for a check-up.
Benn was wanted in the division in connection with several armed robberies.
Lawmen in Region Six on Monday received intelligence and planned an operation along the Corentyne Highway around 9.30 pm.
Stabroek News was told, that ranks went to the Lewis Manor Public Road, where they attempted to intercept a black Toyota fielder wagon driven by a 32-year-old man from Lad Lane, New Amsterdam with three occupants.
However, upon seeing the police the car made a sudden U-turn and Benn exited and allegedly began discharging rounds at the police.
The police then returned fire and gave chase on foot.
It is suspected that after Benn was injured he dropped his firearm and fled into the nearby fields.
The police were able to find the firearm, magazine and ammunition at the location.
The other three persons who were in the vehicle at the time were arrested for questioning on Monday evening.
