A taxi driver was yesterday placed on $150,000 bail after she was charged with causing death by dangerous driving in November of last year.
The defendant, 48-year-old Dacia Holder, of Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD) made her first appearance at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly who read the charge to her.
The charge alleged that the woman on November 12, 2022 at Vlissengen Road and Regent Road, Georgetown, drove motorcar HD 4255 in a manner dangerous to the public causing the death of 26-year-old Jair Giddings of Friendship Squatting Area, EBD.
Holder, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, was represented by attorney George Thomas who in a bail application argued that the woman is not a flight risk since she has never been charged in her life and that she has been cooperating and presenting herself to police from the initial stages of their investigation.
Upon hearing the attorney’s bail application, the police prosecutor immediately stood up and objected to bail based on the seriousness of the offence and the strict penalties which usually follow from such.
However, Magistrate Daly noted that no special reasons were given by the prosecutor to deny bail to the defendant and as such Holder was granted bail of $150,000.
The matter was adjourned to February 8.
