The second annual National Sports Conference organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the National Sports Commission and the Department of Sport will get underway tomorrow morning at the National Cultural Centre.
The event, the brainchild of Minister of Sport, Charles Ramson Jnr., was a resounding success last year and organisers Ramson Jnr., National Sports Commission Chairman, Kashif Muhammad, Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle and Assistant Directors of Sport Melissa Dow Richardson and Franklin Wilson, expect to achieve loftier goals. Tomorrow’s event gets underway at the National Cultural Centre from 09.00 hours to 16.00 hours under the theme, ‘The Science of Sport Development.’
This is the second conference of this nature, following up on 2021’s conference which led to the formation of the nation’s first Sports Academy.
Like last year, this year’s conference will be panel-discussion driven and among the topics that are expected to be discussed are:- The shifting of Training to a more Science-based Format; Inculcating the Winning Mindset; The Business of Sport – Generating More Revenue and Minimum Standards for travelling National Teams.
At the last conference, the topics included Governance, Nurturing Talent, Mindset, Revenue, Sponsorship, Media, Nutrition, International Competitions, Elite Training, Tournaments, Psychology and Injuries and featured the 12 core sports.
Those core sports are Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Squash, Table Tennis, Rugby, Volleyball, Swimming, Football, Tennis, Hockey and Track and Field.
Two executive members from the national federations/associations are expected to not only attend the conference but participate meaningfully.
The conference will be followed by the National Sports Commission (NSC) Awards Ceremony Sunday at the same venue. This will get underway from 18.00 hours and the awards will encompass the best performances by the nation’s top athletes in 2021 and 2022.
The awards will be held for the first time since 2019 which awarded outstanding performers for 2018.
At those awards, Olympian and national table tennis player Chelsea Edghill was named senior Sportswoman of the Year while badminton’s Priyanna Ramdhani copped the junior female Sportswoman of the Year award. National basketball captain Stanton Rose Jr., was adjudged the Sportsman of the Year and Squash’s Shomari Wiltshire the junior Sportsman of the Year.
This year each of the awardees will receive financial incentives
